Paring Down with the Joneses
What made us consume will make us pare down
There is growing momentum for #minimalism in American society with countless documentaries, articles, and influencers feeding our desire to simplify and be present. So is it a fad or here to stay?
In my 10 Reasons for the Quick Mass Adoption of Self Driving Cars I cited “Keeping Up with the Joneses” as a key motivator in the near future for families to ditch car ownership in exchange for subscription car services that fill each individual family’s need.
However while it is a form of keeping up, it is actually a form of paring down. Paring down what we own. Paring down what we consume. Paring down what ties us down.
Where explosive consumption marked the last century a similar paring down will only gain momentum in this century. Once “ownership” becomes uncool the trend to pare down will see unprecedented growth.
